It was to create a second front to liberate France (Normandy's located in northern France). By doing that, they hoped to split Hitler's forces even further and take some of the pressure off of the Soviets who were pressing them for a second front.

The other answers aren't quite as direct. It wasn't to create the atom bomb (that was the Manhattan Project) or the invasion to liberate Italy. Creating a phantom army to lure the Germans away from Normandy was also a real operation, but that was in support of Overlord which was the actual invasion of Normandy.
