why did the North blockade the south?

OpenStudy (savannah_noelle):

To stop the import of weapons and to prevent the exporting of goods, mostly cotton, to fund the war effort.

OpenStudy (nurali):

The main reason for blockading the South was to prevent them from importing weapons, everything from pistols to cannon. The South had almost no manufacturing at the start of the war and so had little means to produce what they needed to fight. The blockade would also prevent them from exporting goods, mostly cotton, to fund the war effort.
