Shmuel is an eight-year-old Jewish boy who was captured by the Germans. He is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Shmuel was sent to a concentration camp called “Out-With.” He is a quiet, frail, and very lonely person who spends most of his time sitting at the camp fence. Shmuel meets Bruno and they become friends.

Bruno is a nine year old boy from Berlin that moves to Poland.  His father is a Military Commandant, and for his job they have to move next to a concentration camp.  Adventures were the things he found fun on this new place.  He was a little confused and didn't understand quite what was going on in the world so while on one of his adventures he meets Shmuel, "the boy in the striped pajamas", and they soon become friends.  Bruno is often scared of what his behavior might result in but keeps visiting his friend and acts brave even through the horrible things that happen.
