which side in the bigger figure corresponds to the side labeled "x" in the small figure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

900

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. They tell you the figures are *SIMILAR* that means the same shape, but one is bigger than the other. the ratio of small to big is 1/9 that means if the big side was 9, the corresponding side in the small figure would be 1 any idea what x is ? (the "big" side is 900)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

100

OpenStudy (phi):

yes,x=100 we could use ratios: \[ \frac{x}{900}= \frac{1}{9} \] multiply both sides by 900: \[ \frac{x}{\cancel{900}}\cdot\cancel{900}= \frac{1}{9} \cdot 900 \\ x= 100\]
