Crosshatching Crosshatching is a shading technique in which one set of lines crosses over (overlaps) another set.The crosshatching lines are far apart and lots of white spaces are visible. This is the technique the artist did in the portrait. We can see that he used this technique for shading.

since i don't know what time period you are talking about here's a link/site you can explore the tells you the history of art. http://www.all-art.org/history12.html - if i'm not mistaken the most common media used by artist throughout the centuries would have to be oil paint. This medium is mostly seen by artists who've had their work in museums.
