I have seen methods like this before. That just seems like a bunch of extra work though. I will become a math teacher and I am a bit nervous about some of these new "tricks" that are being taught. I remember a teacher saying she let her class do this... (3 × 8) + (5 × 6) = 54 Mind you this teacher was simply teaching students how to multiply. This teacher was using 9 × 6 and yes it does equal 54. I say I am nervous because if a student did a multiplication problem that way I would mark it incorrect.
