S I M P L E E C O L O G Y T E R M S Abiotic = Nonliving Biotic = Living Ecosystem = A community of aboitic and biotic factors interacting as a system. Pollution = Chemicals that make a change to an ecosystem. Biosphere = Portion of Earth that supports life Autotroph = An organism that create their own food Heterotroph = An organism that can not create food by themself Herbivore = An organism that eats plants Carnivore = An organism that eats meat Scavenger = Eats dead animals Omnivore = Eats both eat and plants Decomposer = Breaks down dead and decaying plants and animals into simplier molecules that can be digested Biomes = Climatically and geographically defined and distict ecosystems 1. Terrestrial/land biomes 2. Aquatic biomes Climate factors on biomes = Latitude: Arctic, boreal, temperate, subtropical, tropical Humidity: humid, semihumid, semiarid, and arid seasonal variation: Rainfall may be distributed evenly throughout the year or be marked by seasonal variations. dry summer, wet winter: Most areas of the earth get the greater part of their precipitation throughout the mid year months; Mediterranean atmosphere districts get their precipitation throughout the winter months. Elevation: Increasing elevation causes a distribution of habitat types similar to that of increasing latitude. Ecological succession = Change over a period of time of the species of an ecological community over time. It happens when an ecological community undergoes changes following a disturbance of the new habitat. Climate system = atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, land surface, and biosphere. Climate = Climate is the measure of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressue, wind, precipitaiton, atmospheric particle count and other variables in a long period of time, versus weather which is a short time.
