Plants make several chemicals known as auxins, of which the principal one is IAA aka indole 3-acetic acid. It is found mostly in the tips of the shoots and roots. Auxin determines whether the plant will grow upwards or whether it would branch sideways.It stimulates differentiation of phloem and xylem.They change the rate of elongation, as in determines how long the plant will grow.
