Check my answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A drama club is planning a bus trip to New York City to see a Broadway play. The cost per person for the bus rental varies inversely to the number of people going on the trip. It will cost $30 per person if 44 people go on the trip. How much will it cost per person if 60 people go on the trip? Round your answer to the nearest cent, if necessary. I got $40.91

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

As the number of people increase, the cost per person will decrease (since you have an inverse relationship between cost per person and number of people)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So because 60 is larger than 44, this means that the answer must be smaller than $30.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh well I'm not sure what to do now earlier I set up a proportion 30/44=x/60 which gave me 40.91 What would I do to solve something like this?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Inverse variation equations are of the form y = k/x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if x is the number of people and y is the cost, then we know x = 44, y = 30 y = k/x 30 = k/44 30*44 = k 1320 = k k = 1320

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So the equation is y = 1320/x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now if x = 60, then y = 1320/x y = 1320/60 y = 22 Which means the cost per person is $22 (for 60 people)

I understand thank you very much :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
