OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Last year's salary is #S. There. You're about half way done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is #s?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I meant $S, but it really doesn't matter. Once you have a NAME for the result you want, you can solve the problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really don't know what you mean by that I really just need help I need to know the steps to solving this problem?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

The first step in solving the problem is to NAME the answer. Look at the problem statement. "find last years salary" There it is. S = Last Year's Salary. No what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was s=38,160 X .06

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Two things wrong with that. As you have it... s is an increase in salary, not a total salary. .06 * 38160 suggests an increase FROM this year's salary, not an increase TO this year's salary. Don't try to write it all at once. Let the notation help you remember things. S = Last Year's Salary S*0.06 = The salary increase from last year to this year. S + S*0.06 = 38160 Do those pieces make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes thank you
