Oh, okay, good question. Because we're considering independent possibilities. Say we can pick any one of three letters and then any one of three numbers from 0-9
Then for the letters, we have three choices, and then for the numbers, we have 10, right?

so how many possible pairings do we have? let's see. Let the three letters be A, B, and C. then for choice A, we can pair it with 10 numbers, so that's 10... 10 too for choice B 10 for choice C So that's 30 And that's basically what we did, multiply 3 by 10 number of possibilities by the number of possibilities.
