The sum of two consecutive odd integers is 236. What is the smaller integer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you solve these?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Oooo, what's 236/2?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

@MiaKitty1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, 118. Sorry I left for a little :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that it?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Nope, 118 is an even number. Do you agree that 118 + 118 is 236 then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, 118+118 is 236

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Sweet, so....Will this be the same? (118-1)+(118+1) = 236

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I don't think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, I get what you mean so it's 117?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Right! So what would the other # be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

119?

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

YES! So...117 + 119 = 236. They are both odd and consecutive to each other on the number line as odd numbers. And I suppose 117 is the smallest lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks soo much for ur help! :D

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

No probs.

:D
