Find the value of Arctan 1 @mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

"arctan 1" asks, "What is the angle whose tangent equals 1?"

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

|dw:1395103216753:dw|

OpenStudy (mathmale):

How is the tangent function defined? Remember that the sine is defined as the ratio opp/hyp.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

45° ?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

yep

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Kenny has done a very nice job of graphing a triangle in the 1st Quadrant with opp side = 1 and adj side = 1. Yes, that angle is 45 degrees. Mind explaining how you got that?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

me?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Thanks, Kenny, but I meant Ms. Diaz. :)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

okay :)

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

and congratulations for your purple :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I used this!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Thank you! @tdiaz1995 : how would you define the tangent function? How did you use your unit circle to decide that the angle x is 45 degrees in this problem?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

that table has served you well. But it'd be worth learning the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles also. Familar with them yet?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

@mathmale unit circle is not required

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, I memorize them before Spring Break! :D

OpenStudy (mathmale):

It's important that we guide others in the use of approaches that are familiar to them, as the unit circle is familiar to Ms. Diaz. Later we can introduce faster methods.

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Pero sabes porqué es 45?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

En luego de sólo los memorizar?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

OK, Kenny still wants to know how you got 45 degrees for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sólo use la tabla! En realidad no sé por qué es 45°, saben hablar Español? :o

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

pista: el triangulo es isosceles

OpenStudy (mathmale):

:)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Thank you for working together respectfully.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm, porque el triangulo isosceles es de 45°? Estoy en lo correcto? Can you guys explain me why?!?! You're welcome @mathmale! :D

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Exactamente :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Muchas gracias a los dos! I'll do another question because I'm not sure if I got the correct answer! I'll tag you guys to see which one of you can help me, please!

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

En realidad preferirias espanol o ingles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My first language is Spanish! I can understand English but, I think that I'm not that good writing it! Do you understand well both languages?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Pienso que si

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

En realidad pienso que escribis bien ingles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you! Which one do you prefer?

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Mi ingles es mejor que mi espanol, pero me gustaria lo practicar, entonces prefiero hablar espanol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay then! We'll practice your Spanish! I'll post the question in a bit! :D

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

gracias :D

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

hazme un tag :)
