Which statement best describes the goal of scientific research on genetic engineering? A. To create crops that will bring farmers a lot of money. B. To create plants that can produce tasty fruits and vegetables. C. To create plants that solve societal problems like hunger and pollution. D. To create plants that would help the government control the world market.

This is a completely subjective question - the answer depends on who you are and what your interests are. For example, if you are a large corporation who has put a lot of money into developing genetically modified crops you want to earn back your investment - you want crops that will bring farmers a lot of money. Whereas if you are interested in solving world hunger (a more altruistic and, to place my own personal value judgement on it, better goal) you want to develop crops to solve societal problems. it seems many people give lip service to solving societal problems as justification for their actions in this respect - with which I lose patience - regardless of what their aims really are.
