but if you are going for something to look like it's real.. try using pencil and paper, this way you can give it that vivid feeling and depth.

Also try making the mane and tail be wild- have a flow, instead of it being stiff.

Go with GIMP if you're for digital, but paper's the best.
You can use a avariety of soft to hard pencils for your shading needs.

I agree with switching to pencil and paper for better results. But if you want to do art on a computer i would suggest buying a programme. You can also buy these electronic drawing pads that you might like.
