Because it allowed people to write down history in one single image- It was a way of the culture it was how we found out about how they lived back then.

what i think is to capture picture of what happend etc like now days lets say bad criminal happend so people come and use camera to take photos of what happend same in early history person just comes and draws what happen in quick sketch
