two dice,one red and one white are rolled.what is the probability that the white die turns up a smaller number than the red die?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

total number of events = \[6 \times6 = 36\] let us calculate favorable number of events when red is 6 , white can have 5,4,3,2,1 --> (6, 5)(6,4)(6,3)(6,2)(6,1) -->5 events when red is 5, white can have 4,3,2,1 --> (5,4)(5,3)(5,2)(5,1) --> 4 events when red is 4, white can have 3,2,1 --> (4,3)(4,2)(4,1) --> 3 events when red is 3, white can have 2,1 --> (3,2) (3,1) --> 2 events when red is 2, white can have 1 --> (2,1) --> 1 events when red is 1, white can have none so total favorable events = 5+4+3+2+1+0= 15 so probability = 15/36 = 5/12 answer is \[\frac{ 5 }{ 12 }\]
