Simplify. I dont really know where to start. I have never had to do a problem like this and my lesson isn't thorough enough to explain it. (4x + 3y) - (2x -5y) "make sure to distribute the - into the second set of parentheses"

OpenStudy (amistre64):

do you know how to distribute?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

FOIL method right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no

OpenStudy (amistre64):

FOIL is a memory device that can be used if you can remember it, when you are multiplying

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we are not mutliplying (a+b)(c+d) we are subtracting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so, it might help to stack the terms ... (a + b) -(c + d) --------- summ now it should look like a familiar subtraction problem, does it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it does. do i subtract d from b and c from a?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

this is just to present a format, but yes thats the idea. you want to make sure your doing that with your own like terms tho

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(4x + 3y) -(2x - 5y) ---------- 4x - 2x and 3y -- 5y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I came up with the answer of 2x+8y.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for your help!! :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome, and good luck ;)
