The Crusades were entirely based on religion with the Pope ordering the Crusades rather than a government. The Crusaders were fighting the Muslims for the Holy Land, an area in the Middle East that is religiously and culturally important to both groups. The area is still being contested to this day. The effects of the Crusades can still be felt ot this day as they were very brutal and are the basis of much religious hatred.
