I think understanding the reaction mechanism is the best way to learn reactions in organic chemistry. Morrison and Boyd provides good fundamental idea for organic reactions.

Yes. It's best if you understand the detailed mechanism prior to learning the general reaction. Try working out the detailed mechanism for a particular reaction. If you're just starting, you might want to focus on those that are easier, such as S\(\sf_n\)2 and S\(\sf _n\)1 reactions.
