I think understanding the reaction mechanism is the best way to learn reactions in organic chemistry. Morrison and Boyd provides good fundamental idea for organic reactions. *Recommendation based on my experience.

Yes. It's best if you understand the detailed mechanism prior to learning the general reaction. Try working out the detailed mechanism for a particular reaction. If you're just starting, you might want to focus on those that are easier, such as S\(\sf_n\)2 and S\(\sf _n\)1 reactions.
