When you find the number of significant figures something has (Sig Figs), we take the same number of decimal places in our answer as we have available.

For example: 2.0 X 4.0 = 8.0, while 2 X 4 is just 8. The first example has 2 sig figs in each term, while the second only has one sig fig. Our answers are consistent to this. If they are different numbers of sig figs like 2.0 X 4, then we just use the lowest number of sig figs, which in this case is 1, so our answer is for 2.0 X 4 is just 8.
