WILL MEDAL+FAN!!!! 6 GRADE SCIENCE QUESTION!!! Suppose you have two minerals. One mineral fractures into rough pieces, and a second mineral breaks into pieces with smooth surfaces. What does this indicate? A. The second mineral is harder than the first mineral. B.The two minerals have a different arrangement of their atoms. C.Only the second mineral has crystalline structure D. The second mineral is older than the first mineral.
What do you think? Let's look at D. Do you think the age of the mineral is going to affect how it fractures? Can you think of any plausible theory which would explain that, if so?
1. i don't know what "fractures" is 2. i don't know what "plausible" means 3. i cant answer this question>"Can you think of any plausible theory which would explain that, if so?" bc i don't know what its asking... :( i REALLY suck at science..
no idea, i dont know rocks, sorry
Do you have a dictionary? If not, dictionary.com can help. "fractures" is a fancy word for "breaks" "plausible" — something that might be reasonable or true
So, we two minerals. One breaks with rough edges and surfaces, and the other makes nice, clean surfaces. The age of the mineral isn't going to affect the way it breaks, so long as the samples are otherwise identical. The bonds that hold the atoms together don't change with age.
The strength of the material isn't indicated by how it breaks, either. You can break a diamond and create a very smooth surface, if you hit it in the right way. Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance. That would seem to indicate that maybe the second mineral is stronger, except there are also soft materials which also break with nice, clean surfaces!
so A..???
No, I thought I just explained why A was not a good choice — there are both very hard and very soft things that break with smooth surfaces, and if we don't know anything else (like which of our two minerals scratches the other), it doesn't give us reason to conclude that the second mineral is harder than the first.
B or C
???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Definitely B
