There's a lot of material out there covering this, but in short, the Space Race was both a tech and propaganda race between the US and the USSR. 

While getting into space and putting a man on the Moon was a goal either nation wanted to boast about to the world, it also demonstrated just how far their rocket technology was coming along -- and the USSR was much further along than US scientists thought they might be when they put Sputnik in space and later, Yuri Gagarin. 

Why is rocket tech important? Because it also demonstrated just how far either nation could land nukes in each others' back yards. It's also one of the reasons why today, people are concerned over North Korea's satellite launch earlier this year -- not because they could put a satellite in space, but because it demonstrated how advanced their rockets were and how far they could reach.
