11. After September 2, 1949, both the United States and the Soviet Union had atomic weapons that they could use in a war against each other. In a paragraph, analyze how this fact shaped the progress of the Cold War and the relationship between the two countries. You may want to discuss term such as arms race, mutually assured destruction, massive retaliation, and brinkmanship.

Talk about how in 1949 tension was raised between the two countries when the Soviets tested an Atomic bomb and increased again in 1952 because America tested the Hydrogen bomb which was much more powerful. [ Then in 1957 the USSR launched Sputnik etc... and explain how these events changed the relationship. You could also mention why tension between these two countries could have escalated the cold war because they each wanted to better the other making them go to more extremes. Eventually tension decreased because of MAD; no country was willing to risk their own lives to try and destroy the other therefore nuclear war was less likely. ]
12. During the Cold War, people were afraid of communists, both outside and inside the United States. The Red Scare and McCarthyism that grew out of these fears was damaging to the American way of life. During the McCarthy years, many of the freedoms guaranteed in the Bill of Rights were limited. Write a paragraph explaining what lessons can be learned from the McCarthy era about what US citizens need to protect in order to preserve the democratic political system and American way of life.
@KendrickLamar2014 what about this one?
When the people are afraid (like from communism and nuclear war in the 1950's) they are often tempted to give up their hard earned freedoms and rights they've always had to feel more safe/ more secure. [ Also in such a time of fear....bad people and officials or celebrities may use the time of fear and confusion to grab power/ money and position for themselves while breaking everyone elses rights, and causing harm to innocent people. To guard against this we should learn that when 'we the people' (the public) (the society) are in a state of fear from (communists, muslim terrorists, foreign enemies, or a recession/ depression etc.) we need to be extra careful who we listen to, who we follow and to stick up for our rights or we might lose them and the country.
Thank you! :)
