The nations of Europe ruled other nations outside Europe, and often fought each other to control these nations. The USA wa opposed to these overseas empires, and believed all nations should be independent, so they stayed isolated from European conflicts. During WW1 Germany sank US ships and encouraged Mexico to attack USA, so the USA joined the the allies (Britain, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy etc) against Germany. After the war President Wilson wished to get involved in the League of Nations with the European powers. Many Americans feared that joining the League would involve them in Europen wars. The 1920 election became a referendum on joining the League of Nations, with Wilson supporting, and Republican candidate Harding opposed the move. In the end Americans gave in to their fears about European conflicts and elected Harding over Wilson. President Harding went back to isolationism, the USA remained isolated until President FDR decided to enter ww2 after Japan bombed Pearl Harbour.
