Consider two diffraction gratings. One grating has 3000 lines per cm, and the other one has 6000 lines per cm. Both gratings are illuminated with a beam of the same monochromatic light. Which grating produces the greater dispersion? Both gratings produce the same dispersion. The grating with 3000 lines produces the greater dispersion. The grating with 6000 lines produces the greater dispersion. The dispersion cannot be determined without additional information.

@Mashy I dont understand what this is really saying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

monochormatic is the same color or one color

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt it be the same then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mono = one chroma = color monochromatic = one color.. Dispersion usually means how much the colors are split apart.. but in this case, i think .. that dispersion means how much is the light SPREAD across.. so again remember, narrower the slits, closer the slits, more will tbe spreading effect.. so whats your answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6000 lines has great dispersion ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Intuitively, yes the 6000 would have greater dispersion. For the experimental side of this you can look up Young's Double Slit experiment and Bragg's Law for diffraction.

thank you =)

correct!!!

thank you =)
