HELP PRONTO What is produced by the process of meiosis? A. two diploid cells B. four diploid cells C. two haploid cells D. four haploid cells

OpenStudy (blues):

Diploid means the cell has two copies of each chromosome. Haploid means the cell has one copy of each chromosome. In meiosis a diploid cell duplicates its DNA then undergoes two rounds of cell divisions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so A?

OpenStudy (blues):

No - one single diploid cell duplicates its DNA. So now it has four copies of each chromosome. That cell divides, then without duplicating the DNA again, each of those two daughter cells divides again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C?

OpenStudy (blues):

If a cell divides into two cells, then each of those two cells divides into two cells, how many cells do you have in the end?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4..

OpenStudy (blues):

Right. So you have four cells coming out of meiosis. Now you have to figure out whether they are diploid or haploid. The cell you start with is diploid. It has two of each chromosome. It duplicates its DNA. Now it has four copies of each chromosome. Then it divides. How many copies of each chromosome does each of those first two daughter cells have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 each?

OpenStudy (blues):

Correct. Now each of those two daughter cells, which have two copies of each chromosome, divide again. They do not pass go, they do not collect $200, they do not duplicate their DNA again. They just divide. So if they start with two copies, how many copies of each chromosome does each of their two daughter cells get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2?

OpenStudy (blues):

I don't think so. The parent had two copies of each chromosome. It divided. Each new cell got half the DNA from the parent cell. How many does each daughter cell have?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4..?

OpenStudy (blues):

|dw:1395527668504:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it 4.

OpenStudy (blues):

The cell starts with two of each chromosome. It divides. It sends one copy of each chromosome into each daughter cell. Clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes .

OpenStudy (blues):

So, you just worked out that four cells come out of meiosis. And you just figured out that each of these four cells has one copy of each chromosome. So the answer is...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D? or A?

OpenStudy (blues):

Which do think? D or A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D..?

OpenStudy (blues):

I agree. :)

OpenStudy (blues):

Thanks for your patience working through the problem. :)
