The independent variable is the one which you are varying whereas the dependent variable is the one under investigation. For example if you are investigating the effect of temperature on the rate of photosynthesis, then you would vary temperature and measure the rate of photosynthesis (e.g. by counting the number of bubbles released/minute) at that temperature. which means that the independent variable AFFECTS the dependent variable. So in the example i gave to you: Independent variable = temperature Dependent variable (which literally "depends" on a factor) = rate of photosynthesis Therefore the answer is A
