how do i do this?

Draw a set of axis for the cardinal directions. The origin will be your "port." Draw an arrow 35 degrees north of west 10 miles in length. THat is the initial vector. Now, draw another arrow from the tip of the 1st arrow, pointing south, of magnitude 65 miles. Now, draw an arrow from the origin connecting to the tip of the 2nd vector (65mi south vector). |dw:1395542915977:dw| Now, use trig to determine the distance traveled in west-direction, and use that with the 65-miles traveled south in the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance from port. Also, use trig (hint: inverse tangent will work) to find the direction from port.

Hint: to find distance traveled in the west-direction (-x direction on axis) for the original vector, use cosine.

make sure your calculator is in degree mode and not radians

OpenStudy (anonymous):

90-35=55 180-55=125 z^2=10^2+65^2-2(10(650cos125 z=71.2 sinz/65=sin125/71.2 65sin125/71.2=0.748 sin^-1(65sin125/71.2)48.4 35+48.4=83.4?

Look again at the last image I posted. I'm not sure why you chose to find the 125 degree measurement, but I may not be seeing your larger perspective. 10cos(35) is for the small triangle in quadrant 2, which will find the distance traveled west for the 1st vector.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since you know the ship traveled south from the tip of the first vector, you know it crosses the x-axis orthogonally (perpendicularly), forming a right-angle and enabling you to use pythag theorem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also, since the definition of tangent is opposite/adjacent, and you are trying to find the angle theta = opposite/adjacent, you can use inverse tangent to find the direction traveled South of West from port.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or you can use inverse cotangent to find the direction traveled West of South. Either one will work.

sorry i've been trying to type but something happend

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to go. Perhaps someone else can explain this to you in a different way that you will understand. Bye.
