The knight is holding a banner with priests etc on it

Now knights usually fight in wars etc, ie they are agents of politics (kings and queens etc). So him holding a banner of priests signifies that he is maybe fighting in the name of that religion or by the teaching of that religion (ie by the influence of that religion) and there you go

PS. this is the math section so you probably shouldn't listen to anything I just said ;)

I'd rather turn this question around and ask you questions instead.  To your knowledge, and in your imagination, what visual characteristics would denote heroism in a character in a painting?  Would the person's head be more likely be hanging downward, or proudly and bravely in line with the person's spine?  And so on.
