what is the question ? calculate the area ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

http://prntscr.com/33klw5 so you have two rectangles (9-5) by 3 and 9 by 5 3(9-5) + (9*5) = ?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You are looking for the area?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You can do this three ways as shown by the three figures above. In the first figure, the area is (3 mm * 9 mm) + (6 mm * 5 mm) = 27 mm^2 + 30 mm^2 = 57 mm^2 In the second figure, the area is (3 mm * 4 mm) + (9 mm * 5 mm) = 12 mm^2 + 45 mm^2 = 57 mm^2 In the third figure, the area of the entire rectangle is calculated and the missing part is subtracted. (9 mm * 9 mm) - (6 mm * 4 mm) = 81 mm^2 + 24 mm^2 = 57 mm^2

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

As you can see, all methods give you the same answer.

3(9-5) + (9*5)=57
