plot the intercepts and graph the equation x+2y=-4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To find the x-intercept, you plug in y = 0 and solve for x x+2y=-4 x+2(0)=-4 ... replace y with 0 x + 0 = -4 x = -4 So the x-intercept is the point (-4,0)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To find the y-intercept, you plug in x = 0 and solve for y x+2y=-4 0+2y=-4 ... now we replace x with 0 2y = -4 y = -4/2 y = -2 Making the y-intercept to be (0,-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would I graph that?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To plot any line, you just need two points

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So plot (-4,0) and (0,-2)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Then draw a straight line through them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do I go up 2 and sideways 4?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To plot the point (-4,0) , you... step 1) start at the origin (0,0) step 2) move to the left 4 units. Since x = -4 step 3) you do NOT move up or down since y = 0 keep in mind that (x,y) = (-4,0) so x = -4, y = 0

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plotting (0,-2) means you step 1) start at the origin (0,0) step 2) you do NOT move left or right since x = 0 step 3) move down 2 units, since the y coordinate is negative 2 now (x,y) = (0,-2) so x = 0, y = -2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

So here's a blank xy axis |dw:1395623248580:dw|

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

let's add on tick marks |dw:1395623266294:dw| the tick spacing is not to scale, but you get the idea hopefully

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Now plot (-4,0) |dw:1395623354414:dw|
