It could be any animals fur, what ever are in the mountains, so I'm not 100% sure that it's strictly buffalo.

There are no buffalo in the mountains. Mountain men trapped beaver. The skins were used to make men's hats in US and Europe. Very valuable for a while. Your answer would be D
