What role did religion play in prompting settlement to America, especially to New England
The Puritans were not allowed to practice their religion in Europe, so they immigrated to the United States to practice religious freedom.

Puritan Pilgrims in Massachusetts. Outcasts rejected by Pilgrims in Rhode Island, Connecticut was founded for "Puritan Gentlemen", Maryland was established for English Catholics, Mormons were persecuted in New York then Ohio, the Missouri, then Illinois before being driven out in to the Utah territory, The first American settlers in Oregon were missionaries who wanted to teach Christianity to Indians. California has a string of Catholic Missions established by the Spanish to Christianize Indians. New Mexico and Texas had similar Catholic missions.
