The situation was already intense and full of emotion.  If Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie showed sorrow, the issue would have gotten worse.  They would have become social outcasts and perhaps even be subject to violence.

I want to help you, but I don't want to blatantly give you the answer.  Your lack of grammar mechanics shows me that you don't pay attention in English class, did you read the book?  The story is about racism and Tom Robinson was a black man; Aunt Alexandra and Miss Maudie showing sorrow when he died would have turned them into outcasts.  Does this help?
