How did world war II represent global competiton among nations or groups?

The entire world except for parts of africa and south america was at war. They split into two groups axis and allies. The war was about more than just ideology and the obvious worry that the nazi's would take over the world. There was definitely economic motivation.WW2 made the US the superpower that it is today.
