While crossing the Atlantic, sailors spot two mermaids 120° apart on each end of an island that is 6 miles away. How far apart are the mermaids around the outer edge of the island to the nearest tenth of a mile?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12.6 miles 3.1 miles 7.2 miles 20.2 miles these are the only answers I can choose from these questions are giving me headaches eaugh

Wouldn't you use a triangle for this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think so, but im not sure what or how to do it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so think of it this way... so 6 miles=your height of the triangle, and you look to your left and there's a mermaid, and you look to your right 120*, and there's another one. Yo need to find the distance between them.

I know I need to find x, and the length of the hypotenuse is 1 since we're talking about a unit circle, and the adjacent length is 6 but I dont know what to do from that point
