Help? :) Why didn't Italy take part in the exploration of new trade routes? Italy was too concerned with finding a route to Java. Italy was working to establish stronger connections to Greece. Italy was contributing through innovations in shipbuilding. Italy was already in control of the major routes to the east.

Germany was divided into a huge number of principalities united by a very weak government called the Holy Roman Empire. Italy was a group of independent city-states. Leaders in both were too preoccupied with local issues to spare the large resources necessary for an exploration and colonization program.
