To learn solving trig equations, you must know: a) the trig unit circle and the main trig functions: y = sin x; y = cos x; y = tan x; and y = cot x b) How to solve basic trig equations (simplest form of basic trig equations): sin x= a; cos x = a; tan x = a; and cot x = a.

sin^2 x + sin x = sin x(sin x + 1) = 0. Next, solve the 2 basic trig equations: sin x = 0, and (sin x + 1) = 0 a) sin x = 0. The trig unit circle gives sin x = 0 when x = 0; x = Pi, and x = 2Pi b) sin x = -1. The trig unit circle gives sin x = -1 when x = 3Pi/2. For a complete unit circle, called a Period of 2Pi, there are total 4 answers: x = 0; x= Pi; x = 3Pi/2, and x = 2Pi. (0 < x < 2Pi) You may check the answers by replacing these values in the trig equation.
