What does the term “basic unit of matter” refer to?

A, atoms. All matter is composed of atoms, including the elements. Molecules are groups of atoms linked together to form some sort of gas, liquid or solid substance. Examples: O2=oxygen gas, with two atoms of oxygen. H2O=water, liquid comprised of two atoms of hydrogen linked to an atom of oxygen. NaCl=table salt, or sodium chloride, comprised of an atom of sodium bonded with an atom of chlorine.
