simplify Radical help !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Simplify: \[\sqrt{a ^{2}}\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

There are several ways to do this: Re-writing this with the fractional exponent 1/2 results in\[\sqrt{a^2}=(a ^{\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }})^{\frac{ 2 }{ 1 }}=a^1=a\] Since finding the square root of a^2 effectively finds the absolute value of a, remember that \[\sqrt{a^2}=|a|\]
