The Vietnam war was a massive failure, yes. Social action in the US during the late sixties and early seventies ended that war. Otherwise we'd still be there fighting and dying for nothing, as we are today, in Iraq. - you choose from here

The US has no troops in Iraq. The length of the Vietnam war was largely due to Johnson's desire to not lose. He'd much rather spend time on his domestic policy. Nixon bombed Viet Cong supply lines in Cambodia and was criticized, but it brought the war to an end. His Vietnamization of the war, training and supplying the Army of South Viet Nam to defend it's country, worked. The 1972 Peace Accords put and end to aggression from the North and allowed the US to withdraw troops. The failure came 3 years later when Congress decided to cut off aide to South Vietnam. The video you see of helicopters evacuating our embassy in Saigon shows the result of Congress shamefully abandoning our friends after a military victory a few years before.
