Describe some effects of fear of communism on society.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There were two periods in history that were called "Red Scares" because people were worried about communism. The first Red Scare was around when Lenin and the Bolsheviks took over Russia and instituted the USSR. The second one was after WW2 when relations between the Soviets and the West soured. People got paranoid in both accounts. The second Red Scare is typified by people like McCarthy who held public hearings to out suspected communists. Unfortunately, a lot of innocent people were caught up in that mess, ruining their lives for only being suspected of being "un-American".
