Two number cubes are rolled. What is the probability of each event? Sum is 8. I don't get how to do the work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

count how many ways there are to get an eight on two dice (they are dice, not number cubes) then divide the total by 36, the number of all possible rolls

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you like help counting the ways to get a total of eight?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 8/36 but that's not the answer in the book it stated it was 5/36

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is not the number 8 over 36, it is the number of ways to roll an eight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wanna count the ways to roll a total of 8 on two dice?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure because im lost

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok you have two dice, say one is red, the other blue we can list the ways to get a total of eight \[(\color{red}2,\color{blue}6)\] is one way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now lets list them all \[(\color{red}2,\color{blue}6)\\ (\color{red}3,\color{blue}5)\\ (\color{red}4,\color{blue}4)\\ (\color{red}5,\color{blue}3)\\ (\color{red}6,\color{blue}2)\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is where the 5 comes from in the numerator, five ways to get a total of eight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I see my mistake I did 2 (4,4)s. Thank you so much for your help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw a common mistake, but if you did that you would have got 6 up top
