The leader of Japan was Hirohito, also known as Emperor Shōwa in Japan proper. Hirohito came to power on December 25th, 1926 after the death of his father Yoshihito, Emperor Taishō. After World War II he was allowed to remain as Emperor by the US in order to pacify the Japanese people, and he would remain Emperor until his death on January 7th, 1989. There is debate over how much a role he played in directly influencing events, specifically those relating to the invasion of China, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and other military operations. It is extremely likely that his hands were far from clean in all those matters, though.
