How did foreign changes present new challenges for the United States?
Time period?
There's a lot. Do you want it all or are you focusing on certain countries?
Africa was a problem because South Africa still had Apartheid. But they were a major anti-communist force on the continent. The US was supporting the anti communist UINTA in Angola. South Africa supported that. SA was occupying Namibia to keep communist forces at bay. South Africa had other anti-communist efforts in other countries too. At the time Nelson Mandela and his group were being courted by the Soviets. They could have easily gone that way. So the US had a sticky situation. Americans began demanding an embargo of SA. Reagan and company had to manage that and ended up helping FW DeKlerk end apartheid and open the election process. And free Mandela.
