The mean score on a political attitude scale is 5 and the standard deviation is 2. The distribution is normal. Using the percentage approximations for the normal curve, how many people would get a score between 5 and 9?

Your best bet is to apply the Empirical Rule. Are you familiar with that? Note that x=5 is exactly in the middle of the standard normal distribution, and that 9 would be two standard devs. above the mean. Does that help you?
