what are some functions that a financial planner would use for excel?

I'm sure there are too many to list here. Your best bet would be to keep track of them as you use them, and build a nice collection. In addition to saving the formula though, you should also save an explanation of the formula in case you ever have to explain or check your work. I don't mean to save a link to a page explaining it either, web resources can disappear but the need to understand your work will not.

If you open Excel and go to the Formulas tab and click on Financial it gives you functions and you can insert functions, formulas that is used for financial. You can write down the name of the function a write down the formula to show if you need to.
