Capacitors in parallel: Give as clear as explanation as possible as to why it is physically reasonable to expect that two identical parallel plate capacitors are placed in parallel ought to have twice the capacitance as one capacitor.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

When Capacitors are connected in parallel. The net capacitance is sum of individual capacities. C'=C+C=2C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One of the factors that influences the capacitance of a capacitor is the surface area of the plate. Because two capacitors in parallel have the same voltage across them and they are identical, you have effectively doubled the surface area of the capacitor, just it is in two different locations.
