OpenStudy (kaederfds):

Alfred the Great

OpenStudy (beatboxingfetus):

Æthelstan became the first king to rule England after he conquered Northumbria in 927. He is; by some modern historians seen as the first king of England. Although, arguments are made for a few different kings that controlled enough of the ancient kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons to be the first King of England. Offa, king of Mercia, and Egbert, king of Wessex, are sometimes described as kings of England writers, but not by all historians. I can say that the first documented King of England was Alfred the Great. Most historians will agree with that statement. Alfred defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, and by the time of his death had become the dominant ruler in England. He was also the one and only English King to be accorded "the Great".
